Underwing pattern in Common Guillemots from Norway

This gallery offers a unique perspective on Common Guillemots by focusing on their underwing and flank patterns. The underwing displays significant individual variation, but can potentially provide insights into geographical differences, ie between southern (albionis) and northern (hyperborea, etc.) subspecies, as well as Palearctic and Nearctic birds. A few pictures of perched birds are also included showing the “anchor“ pattern of the flanks that might be diagnostic of hyperborea according to Garner (2015), although this pattern is shown by only <1% of birds in Hornoya island. All photographs in this collection were taken in Hornoya, Finnmark, Norway in April 2023 by Guillermo Rodríguez.
